The Town of Bedford in Westchester County is comprised of three charming and historic hamlets: Bedford Village, Bedford Hills and Katonah. While Bedford Hills is the town’s center of business and commerce, much of the area’s cultural activity happens in Katonah, including at the Katonah Museum of Art. Bedford Village, meanwhile, is the town’s historic district. Founded in 1680 by a group of Puritans from nearby Stamford, Connecticut, Bedford served as Westchester’s county seat during the American Revolution and is home to the county’s oldest government building, where patriots like John Jay and Aaron Burr once conducted business. Other notable current and former residents include actors Chevy Chase and Bea Arthur, fashion designer Ralph Lauren and physicist J.B. Gunn.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates two disability benefits programs: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are available for adults and children who are disabled or blind and have limited income and resources, while Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is available to disabled persons, their spouses and children, regardless of income and resources, if the disabled person has made sufficient payments into the system.

In order to obtain benefits under either program, a person must file a claim with the SSA showing that he or she suffers from one or more physical or mental impairments preventing the person from working for at least one year. The claims process can be long and complicated. The SSA initially denies the majority of claims filed, including many with merit. A person whose claim is initially denied should not give up: We believe the initial decision is intended to discourage claimants from carrying out an appeal.

Appealing an SSA decision on a disability claim typically involves a hearing before an SSA Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). The ALJ hearing is the best opportunity to prove and win a case. Although the waiting time for a hearing is often extensive, it is the only time a claimant is face to face with the decision maker.

With more than 50 years of combined experience, the Social Security Disability attorneys at Hermann Law Group have the expertise and litigation background that can be vital in the claims process. We assist clients by filing the claim on the client’s behalf, gathering the necessary evidence to prove the claim and following up with SSA staff to ensure that it has everything it needs to decide on the claim. We also represent clients at an administrative hearing or in a federal appeal, if necessary.

We are so confident in our abilities that in Social Security Disability cases, we will not charge you a fee unless we win your case.
